Despised and Rejected
Isaiah chapter 53 speaks prophetically of Jesus Christ:
โHe is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.โ
โIsaiah 53:3
Much has been written about the cruel treatment Jesus suffered at the hands of the Roman soldiers. Yet considerably less is said about the pain of being despised, rejected and hated by the very people He came to save.
We live in a world where people are expected to follow the crowd and accept whatever society declares to be right. The life of an unborn child can be rejected and ended simply because that child is unwanted. That precious life, created by God, is despised before it has even had the opportunity to enter the world.
In England, when a council covered a tree to prevent birds from nesting in it, there was a great public outcry. People were rightly concerned for the welfare of the birds. Yet where is that same compassion and concern for unborn children? Wildlife should be protected, but surely human lifeโcreated in the image of Godโshould also be valued and defended.
Throughout history, many Christians have been imprisoned, persecuted and murdered because of their faith in Jesus Christ. This persecution continues in many countries today, yet much of the world remains as quiet as a church mouse.
Jesus warned His followers:
โIf the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.โ
โJohn 15:18
A Christian who truly lives for God may sometimes be despised and rejectedโnot because they have done wrong, but because they love the Saviour and refuse to deny His truth. Nevertheless, we must continue to stand faithfully, speak with compassion and follow Christ, remembering that He was despised and rejected before us.
